Biography

  • Born in Ankara in 1967, Kerim Suner graduated from Bogazici University with a degree in Computer Engineering. After completing his master’s degree in Business Administration at Koc University, Suner worked in the computer industry from his student years onward. In 2000, bringing together the professions of his mother, one of Turkey’s first art gallery owners, and his father, one of the country’s first computer specialists, he founded lebriz.com, Turkey’s first online art portal which operated for 23 years hosting over half a million works by over ten thousand artists.
Although he was seriously interested in  photography during his high school years, this passion was sidelined during his computer engineering carrier. He started to spend more time  with photography during 2010s. Starting with a digital camera, then moving to a manual-focus digital camera, an analog camera, and eventually an antique bellows camera, he began producing handmade photographs, deliberately moving against the increasingly artificial nature of technology by going all the way back to 1851 in both photographic capture and printing techniques. At 1851.studio, which he founded in 2016, he works to learn historical photographic processes, keep them alive in the post-digital era, and pass them on to future generations.
